The concept of sustainable development refers to the process of development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Brundtland Report, 1987, United Nations).

Sustainable development is based on three equal pillars which are social, environmental and economic sustainability. Our project “Thumbs up for Gaia” primarily deals with environmental sustainability, which we prefer to call “Low-Environmental Impact,” but stays in close and direct contact with the other two.

„Permaculture is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive systems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of the landscape with people providing their food, energy, shelter and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way.” - Graham Bell, The Permaculture Way

If we want to define our concrete plans and principles, we have to say it really is a permacultural experiment, which for us means to be more connected every day to Mother Nature. Concept of our permaculture experiment: We plan to build an ecological village with a low-environmental impact, which is based on a cooperation of everything nature provides us. We know that it takes time in order for us to reach our goal in the field of low-environmental impact as well as in that of Permaculture.

Our steps

One of our first steps is the make-over/transformation of our land. Because we plan to produce the plants in different groups and plant communities, we will have more, but smaller amounts of them. In some ways, it is necessary to extend the range of edible plants (or rather re-discover the edible plants), while we have to say goodbye to (or reduce the role of) some of the basic foods we had in the past.

But we also know that the basics are the most important. This is why for the building of our project “Thumbs Up For Gaia” in Sítio do Pomar, we lean on our principles, even if it takes us longer this way. We are serious in taking all the time we need to listen to Mother-Earth and go by Her Consciousness in everything we do.

Our Principles

  • Protection of nature with a low-environmental impact and a natural lifestyle
  • Life within a varying spiritual community, where everyone is responsible for their own environmental behaviour.
  • Life within a varying spiritual community, where everyone is responsible for their own environmental behaviour.
  • To share our experience and knowledge about local/global solutions for environmental problems.
  • Sharing knowledge with humanity and teach our children how to nurse our planet.
  • Having respect for, and rediscovering of “Ancestral Knowledge of Nature”
